Life comes at you all the time. Some things flow through you and don’t catch the attention and some do. When your attention gets caught you may feel all your nerve endings all on “fire”. You may feel very energetic. You may feel your heart beating fast. Your thoughts may be racing and you can’t sit still.
It’s these moments that you most need to retreat from the outside world and go within. This is a profound opportunity to calm your nervous system and learn about yourself? Why did this specific person/thought/event etc “catch me” and what do I need to learn from it?
There are a number of wonderful tools and techniques you can utilize to assist yourself on calming the nervous system to ‘get present’ again.
The first thing I recommend is taking 3-10 deep breaths. Fully inhale. Inhale so that you feel your belly expand. You can count to 6 hold, and release over 10 seconds. While you’re doing these breaths see if you can place your attention at your nose or mouth, or even in your belly.
Allow the thoughts to flow through your mind while you’re doing this, but see if you can take one step back and watch them flow through your mind, instead of interacting with them.
Two after your deep breathing exercise, go make some tea. Chamomile or valerian or any sleepy time teas can be very supportive.
If you have any flower essences, Rescue Remedy or Chamomile, also can be very supportive.
Do you have any essential oils and a diffuser? Violet, Chamomile, Lemon Verbena, Catnip, Marjoram, Hops, Valerian, Vetiver, Patchouli, Petitgrain all for relaxing. Also frankincense for grounding.
Eating can be very grounding. Go grab a snack. A piece of fruit or some vegetables. Something that has life force and came from the ground. Something raw.
Writing. Pull out your journal and get all of those thoughts out of your body, and physically onto paper. See how many pages you can fill until you feel empty.
Meditation – I find body scan meditations are the best for getting a person present and assisting in calming the hormones in calming down and releasing it’s grip on the body so your emotional field can calm.
Exercise – Exercise is grounding and calming. Go for a walk, hoola hoop, turn on music and dance. At the height of this stress you have excess energy, help it get out. Take 30 min to go walk or do some form of exercise that will assist you with the energy release.
While this list is not fully comprehensive, it gives you some tools you can use by yourself to calm your nervous system, your anxiety levels, your mind.
